If you are a first-time homebuyer, you might be eligible to take advantage of the $8000.00 tax credit (or up to 10% of the purchase price) of your new home.

A first-time homebuyer is defined as someone who did not own another principal residence at any time during the three years (36 months) prior to the date of purchase.

There are some income limitations, you must retain the home 3 years, and it must be your primary residence. 

In the new bill just passed, there is a "move-up" credit that allows individuals that have lived in a home as their principal residence for the past 5 years, consecutive, out of 8 years will be elgible for a $6500.00 refundable tax credit when perchase is completed between November 6, 2009 and April 30, 2010.
